Steam Blocking

Steam blocking is faster than wet blocking and works well for pieces that just need light reshaping. You don't fully saturate the fiber — you use steam to relax it.

How to steam block:

  1. Pin your piece to blocking mats at target dimensions.
  2. Hold a steam iron 1–2 inches above the fabric. Never touch the iron to the knitting.

Lace shawls show the most dramatic blocking transformation. Here's the full process:

  1. Soak in lukewarm water with wool wash for 20 minutes.
  2. Remove and roll in a towel. Press firmly — don't twist or wring.
  3. Lay out on blocking mats. Start pinning from the center top.
  4. Pin the spine first (center line), stretching to your target length.
  5. Pin the top edge, stretching to your target wingspan.
  6. Pin each point along the bottom edge. Lace shawls with pointed edging need a pin at every point for clean, crisp tips.
