How to Read a Yarn Label: Weight, Gauge & Care

Keep the exact product information

Save the manufacturer, product name, color, dye lot when supplied, fiber composition, and full care instructions. A photograph can preserve the original label. Do not infer fiber composition from an unfamiliar abbreviation or assume that a missing dye-lot number means every ball will match. Ask the maker when an important field is unclear.

Distinguish category, mass, and length

The Craft Yarn Council system runs from Lace (0) through Jumbo (7). Use the yarn weight chart to compare the category ranges and regional names. The category is thickness guidance, not the mass of a ball or a universal length per gram. Labels may separately state grams or ounces and yards or meters. Needle diameters shown beside a category are tool recommendations, not the diameter of the yarn.

For unit conversion, one yard equals 0.9144 meters. A label stating 200 yards therefore represents 182.88 meters before label rounding. Two products with the same mass or category can contain different lengths.

Compare with the pattern gauge

Read both the measurement span and the stitch type used for label gauge. Knitting stockinette and single crochet have different reference ranges. Four inches is 10.16 centimeters, so keep the actual stated span when calculating.

The pattern gauge is the target for that pattern, and label gauge is a starting reference. Make a representative swatch in the intended stitch pattern, construction, and permitted finishing treatment. Compare stitch and row gauge separately; matching a category or needle number does not establish finished fit.

Read the complete care instruction

Care symbols cover washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional textile care. Their additional marks, numbers, and text matter: do not identify a treatment from the outer shape alone. Check the temperature unit and use the linked CYC chart or the manufacturer's explanation for the exact symbol.

The word superwash does not replace the care label. Check permitted washing temperature, cycle, and drying method separately. Machine washing permission does not automatically mean tumble drying is permitted. For an item combining yarns, fabric, and other components, check the applicable instructions for the whole combination and test a representative sample.

Treat unfamiliar logos as a verification task

An unfamiliar pictogram does not establish resistance to moths or flame, recycled content, or a certification. Verify it with the manufacturer or the named certification scheme. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 concerns testing for harmful substances against its criteria; check the certificate or QR code using the scheme's Label Check. Do not turn a logo into an unrestricted safety or organic-content claim.

Use quantity calculations as planning arithmetic

Compare the actual pattern requirement or measured swatch use with the label length. For example, a planning requirement of 500 yards divided by 220 yards per skein is about 2.27, so rounding upward gives three whole skeins before any additional allowance. This does not establish that 500 yards is sufficient for a particular project. Joins, finishing, gauge changes, and waste need their own allowance.

For a partial skein, estimate length as remaining yarn mass divided by full label mass, multiplied by full label length. Exclude packaging and assume consistent length per gram within that same yarn. WPI or a weight category cannot supply a missing label ratio.

When information is missing

Keep unknown fiber content and care requirements unresolved. Ask the seller or maker for the exact product information; do not use an open flame to identify mystery yarn. Appearance, feel, or WPI alone cannot prove fiber composition or a safe care method. If identification affects safety or the intended use, obtain qualified textile identification before committing the yarn to that use.
